Scoring Your Competition
This tutorial will show you how to manage Entry Scoring for your Contest Event. Competition Manager allows you to quickly enter scoring information, in real-time, as it comes in from your competition venues, dramatically reducing the time from the end of the competition period to the time results are available for release to event participants, and even to the public, via the Web. Note that for simplicity, in this tutorial we will occasionally refer to Competition Manager simply as "C.M." If you haven't yet done so, we recommend you view the tutorials entitled "Competition Manager Overview", "Logging into the AcuWeb Admin Area", "Overview of the Admin Start Page", "Setting Up Your Competition" and "Scheduling Your Competition Events" before continuing.
First, log in to the AcuWeb Contest Management area, and select Competition Manager from the Jump Menu. This will take you to the Admin Start Page. From there, select your contest from the list to see the Contest Items menu for your event. Now, scroll down the menu to the area labeled "Competition Setup...", similar to what you see at left. In this tutorial, we'll focus on the item labeled "Scoring - Entry & Verification."
When you click on the "Scoring - Entry..." item, you'll be taken to the Scoring Main Menu [similar to what's shown at right]. From here, you can quickly manage the entry and verification of competition scores for your Contest. Typically, one or two people can easily manage the entry of scores, even for the largest competition. Scores can be entered in "real time" as they arrive from each competition room. Competition Manager is also capable of accepting automated scoring input, such as data files from "bubble form" readers; contact the Acuity System Administrator for details.
To manually enter scores, from the Enter Scores column of the Scoring Main Menu, simply select the competition venue for which you wish to enter scores. You'll be taken to the Scoring Entry Screen for that category, which will display the entries for that venue, in chronological order. Enter the judges' score for each entry in the small text fields in the "Score" column. (TIP: When preparing for your Contest, if you run your Scoring Transmittal Sheets by venue (for judges to record their final assessments), sorted by chronological order, the entries will be listed in the same order as the Scoring Entry Screen -- making scoring quick and less prone to data entry errors.) For each entry, just below the score input box, note the checkbox with the word "Advance" just beneath it. This is how you can tell CM which entries scored well enough to advance to your next round of competition (or, if this is the final round, to the next level of competitive event). Decisions to advance entries, of course, should only be made by an authorized Event Administrator; and should not be made until all scores have been entered and double-checked. When an entry is marked to "advance," it (and all participant data related to that entry) will automatically appear in the Registrant and Entries lists for the next level of competition.
To quickly access scores for double-checking, an assistant can click View Scores on the "Scoring Main Menu" to see a compact, "read-only" version of the scoring entry. However, when it is time to publish your competition results, you should use CM's Custom Report tools to generate properly sorted, properly formatted results lists. For more on setting up and using Custom Reports, see our tutorial on "Reporting Functions in Competition Manager ."
